The Spillepengen interchange has now opened again. Its reconstruction has enhanced the conditions for freight transport to Northern Harbour and Malmö Industrial Park.
The Spillepengen junction is one of the most important traffic hubs in the region’s road network. It connects Malmö with the surrounding motorways. As the junction also functions as a main entrance to the port, it is consequently called ”the key to Northern Harbour”. More than 40,000 vehicles pass through every 24 hours. About a quarter are lorries and other heavy traffic.
New bridge increases capacity
The reconstruction work started in spring 2014 and ended in November 2015. Spillepengen has now acquired new overpasses, including a 370 metre long bridge which facilitates commuter traffic to and from Malmö.
The reconstruction enhances the conditions for freight transport to and from the port and Malmö Industrial Park.
Moreover, road safety in the area has improved.
“The new Spillepengen is significant for Malmö’s development, as well as for sustainable and safe transportation to the port as the city grows”, said Malmö’s municipal commissioner Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh in her inaugural speech.
Traffic to double
The reconstruction is also important for Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), which was previously designated an EU Core Port. This means that the terminals in both Malmö and Copenhagen are of particular importance for the European transport network, partly due to the fact that CMP connects transportation from Stockholm – Göteborg with the rest of Europe.
Road traffic around Spillepengen is expected to increase substantially in coming years. This applies to both private cars and heavier traffic. For example, traffic to Northern Harbour may double by 2030.
