IKEA is building its new head office at Svågertorp in southern Malmö. “Ships with concrete panels destined for the construction site are being received at Frihamnen in Malmö”, says Björn Larsson, Terminal Manager at CMP.
The first ship laden with building materials for IKEA arrived a few weeks ago. It contained 1,600 tonnes of concrete panels and was the first of a total of three which will be arriving. All the ships come from Klaipeda in Lithuania.
“We unload the building components and place them on the quay”, says Björn Larsson. “That’s the start of a shuttle service of lorries which then take the goods onward. We load the lorries in a specific order to accommodate the building site”.
“Malmö City is expanding substantially”, he continues. “CMP is well located strategically to be able to handle projects like this. We have equipment for this type of freight, which is a bit special. And we have the experience and procedures that are required”.
IKEA’s new head office is 20,000 square meters in size and will be completed in September 2015. It will be the new workplace for 800 people.
